Samir secures suspended sentence for client found with 16,500 cigarettes at airport
Samir’s client was charged with 3 counts of evasion of duty related to importing a total of 160,780 cigarettes.
This case concerned the client being stopped three times in 2023 in London City and Stansted airports, where Border Force officers discovered tens of thousands of cigarettes in the client’s luggage. The total duty evaded was calculated to be more than £79,000.
Representing the client at Snaresbrook Crown Court, Samir put forward relevant mitigation submissions that assisted in the Court deciding to impose a Community Order even though a prison sentence was a likelihood based on the Sentencing Guidelines.
