Civil News: Private hire taxi driver in plying for hire case

Samir Pasha’s client was charged with Plying for Hire without Licence and Driving without Insurance in a prosecution brought by Milton Keynes Council.

The client was charged with these offences dating back to an incident in December 2024 where the client admitted plying for hire in relation to an undercover test purchase operation being carried out by council officers.

Samir’s client pleaded guilty and after strong mitigation was given a small Fine and 6 points for the No Insurance charge and a £61 Fine for Plying for Hire by the bench at Milton Keynes Magistrates Court.

Samir astutely pointed out to the court that the sentencing guidelines for taxi touting/soliciting for hire not applicable to Plying for Hire which is under the Town Police Clauses Act 1847. The original penalty for this offence under the 1847 Act used to be 40 shillings, which had been updated to a maximum fine of £500.
